What are the minimum system requirements to run Document Locator?
Document Locator's minimum requirements are defined in detail on the system requirements page.
What databases can I use as the back end to Document Locator?
Microsoft SQL Server 2000, 2005 or 2008 standard edition or higher is required to utilize Document Locator’s full list of features. From its website, Microsoft offers free 120 day evaluations of SQL Server 2000, 2005 or 2008 free of charge. You can download the trial software from this URL http://www.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2008/en/us/default.aspx.
Does Document Locator support remote access?
Yes. Document Locator's authentication process allows remote user connectivity once the user has created a valid connection onto the database server's network using RAS or VPN. Additionally, Document Locator can also be deployed using Terminal Services or other types of remote desktop solutions like Citrix. Another alternative is to publish documents to remote users via the optional Document Locator WebTools module.
How would having multiple repositories be helpful?
By creating additional Document Locator repositories, users have the ability to run departmental, business-unit level or even personal repositories. This allows users to centralize a group's documents, making them easier to find, control and manage. Users can then access the different repositories through Document Locator's console based on their security rights. Document Locator supports across repository moves through either drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste.
Can I run Document Locator on a PC using a Unix-based operating system?
We currently do not have direct support for Unix, Linux or Mac OS clients. However, these various OS clients can run the "Microsoft Terminal Services" component on their machine to connect to a "Terminal Server" that has Document Locator installed on it.

How do I attach files into email from the Document Locator Repository?
There are two ways to send files via Microsoft Outlook email: as attachments or as links. Attachments attach the file to the email message. Links, on the other hand, will allow the recipient to manipulate the document directly within Document Locator. A user may choose to view the document or check it out to work on it directly, without going through the Document Locator application. In order for the links feature to work, the recipient must be a authorized member of the Document Locator system and also have a connection to the repository.
Does Document Locator work on a Novell Network?
Yes, Document Locator can be installed in a Novell network environment. If the Novell network does not have Active Directory services running, then Document Locator should be configured to use SQL Server authentication only.
Can Document Locator be deployed on a Wide Area Network (WAN)?
ColumbiaSoft Document Locator is capable of running on wide area networks. If you have broadband or T1 connections between sites, you can run Document Locator and access all of the rich features. However, if you have limited bandwidth between sites, we recommend using a remote desktop solution such as Terminal Services from Microsoft or Document Locator Web Tools.
What scanners are compatible with Document Locator?
ColumbiaSoft has certified our Document Locator software on Kodak scanners and we highly recommend Kodak document scanners for their reliability and imaging accuracy.
Document Locator supports all TWAIN-compliant scanners. In addition to Kodak, the following scanners have been tested with our application: Canon DR3080C/DR3060C; Ricoh Aficio IS330DC; HP Scanjet Series; Panasonic KV-S2025C (SCSI), KV-S2026C (SCSI & USB 2.0), KV-S2045C (SCSI), KV-S2046C (SCSI & USB 2.0).
Does Document Locator create OCR PDF Documents?
Yes, using our optional ScanStation module.
What version of eCopy is supported by Document Locator?
The Document Locator Connector for eCopy ShareScan OP works with eCopy versions 4.x and higher.
What type of Web Server can I use with Document Locator?
Document Locator WebTools runs on Microsoft Internet Information Services, or IIS 6.0 and higher.
What Operating System can I use with Document Locator?
Our client software is compatible with Windows XP and higher.
Can I buy Microsoft SQL Server from ColumbiaSoft?
Yes. ColumbiaSoft is a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner and an authorized value-added reseller for Microsoft SQL.
What file type can I manage with Document Locator?
Document Locator can store any file type as long as you have the supporting application installed on the computer used for viewing or editing documents of that file type.
Does Document Locator support clustered SQL Server environment?
Yes, Document Locator will support SQL Servers configured in Active/Passive mode.
What email client is supported with Document Locator?
To benefit from the full experience of Document Locator, we recommend Microsoft Outlook. You may also use MAPI-compliant email clients to receive email notifications, however they will not have the add-in integration that you get with Outlook.
Does Document Locator support SQL Server 64-bit?
Yes. (Note there is limited support from third-party iFilter vendors. See iFilters page for a complete list.)
What databases should be backed up for recovery?
You must back up the DL_RepCatalog database and all repositories. It is common practice to back up the system database for recovery purposes.
Can the optional Advanced Scanning Module be installed as a stand-alone component?
No, you must install the Advanced Scanning Module on top of an existing Document Locator Client. The Advanced Scanning Module requires a separate license.
Does Document Locator function on Citrix or Terminal Services environment?
Yes, Document Locator will work on Citrix or Terminal Services environments.
What is an iFilter and where are they installed?
iFilters are third-party components from vendors such as Adobe or AutoDesk that allow you to perform full-text searches for their file types.
What is the maximum file size?
Microsoft SQL supports 2GB per file.
